Housing Directorate started its journey in the year 1955 under the Administrative control of Public Works Department, Government of West Bengal and later came under the Administrative control of Housing Department in the year 1968. Since its inception, Housing Directorate was committed to public service, especially to the State Government Employees who came to the then Calcutta and other District Head Quarters from remote areas of the state as well as to other public, for construction of flats under the scheme of Rental Housing Estates and Public Rental Housing Estates, categorised as MIG, LIG, WCLC, SCP and their maintenance as well.

Over the years Housing Directorate without being confined to the maintenance of those Housing Estates, expanded itself in other dimension and proved its worth in implementing various Government Schemes across the districts of West Bengal, in the interest of public service such as construction of Super Speciality Hospitals, Pathasathi (Motel), Working Women’s Hostel (Karmanjali), Night Shelter in various Government Hospitals for patient parties, Nijashree (Mass Housing Scheme), rehabilitation under RCFA Development Project and above all Chaa Sundari, a unique Housing Project for Tea Garden Workers of North Bengal.

This is a glorious journey and the said projects are indeed milestones along the path of Housing Directorate. The gradual evolution of Housing Directorate with a team of expert Civil and Electrical Engineers, in the rank of Junior Engineers, Assistant Engineers, Executive Engineers, Superintending Engineers and Chief Engineer as the Head of Directorate not only imparts expertise in the field of construction and maintenance but also expedites execution in a time bound and effective manner. The contribution of other official staff in the Directorate Head Office and in the offices of Circles, Divisions and Sub-Divisions in keeping liaison among the offices and with the Administrative Department for implementation of projects are equally significant.

In true sense of term, Housing Directorate is heading in its noble mission towards rendering services to the people in the field of accommodation, shelter and for achieving excellence unparallelly.
